India successfully launched its first space docking mission on Monday using an Indian-made rocket, marking a significant advancement in its space capabilities.
The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) initiated the Space Docking Experiment (SpaDex) mission with the launch of a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) rocket.
The SpaDex mission entails deploying two small spacecraft, each weighing approximately 220 kilograms (about 485 pounds), into a low-Earth circular orbit.
Achieving this mission will make India the fourth country ever to accomplish such a feat.
"We are delighted to announce the successful launch of PSLV 60 for the SpaDeX mission," said ISRO Chairman S. Somanath shortly after the launch.
"The rocket has successfully placed the satellites in the intended orbit." If all goes as planned, the first docking attempt could occur by January 7, he added.
Completing an unmanned docking will position India alongside the US, Russia, and China, marking a crucial milestone for future space endeavors.
SpaDex was launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Andhra Pradesh at 1630 GMT.
Technology Essential for India's Space Ambitions
According to ISRO authorities, this technology is vital for "India’s space ambitions, such as Indian on Moon missions, sample return from the Moon, the construction and operation of the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS), etc."
"In-space docking technology is crucial when multiple rocket launches are required to achieve common mission objectives," officials stated.
